Yes: equipment must comply with Regulation (EU) 2016/425, carry CE marking and have an EU declaration of conformity available. Federations require approved, compliant equipment for athletes to enter competitions.

What does “WAKO Approved” mean?
WAKO approves equipment from certified manufacturers; only approved equipment is permitted in WAKO competitions and tournaments.
Which EN standards apply?
EN 13277‑1 applies to all protective equipment; EN 13277‑7 to gloves and foot guards; EN 13277‑4 to headguards; EN 13277‑2 to shin guards. They cover impact, ergonomics, retention and coverage.
How can OEKO‑TEX®, GRS and bluesign® be verified?
OEKO‑TEX®: Label Check; GRS: chain of custody and percentage of recycled content; bluesign®: components marked “bluesign APPROVED” or “bluesign PRODUCT”.
How long is an EU type-examination certificate valid? What about standards updates?
Typical validity is five years for Categories II and III; harmonised standards are updated periodically by the European Commission.
